Hello! My name is Joshua Oommen, and welcome to my Substack. I am a 4th year medical student in the United States, and I explore the intersection between education, philosophy, and medicine.

Let me tell you a bit about myself.

Insight is what I’m after. Both as fruit from my learning process and as a valuable commodity for others. We are drowning in information and hot takes. What we need are practices that cultivate wisdom. This Substack serves as a repository of lessons and riddles I’m currently wrestling with as a young person. Feel free to join me.

I’ve dabbled in various domains and interests ranging from strength and conditioning to philosophy, medical science, and religious practices. You will see these interests bleed into the things I write about or discuss with people.

I dream of becoming a kind of physician-philosopher. How I will contextualize that in my life is yet to be seen. I’m wired to wonder aloud about the why while my I’m socialised in my professional training to focus on the how. I can rest easy that my lofty philosophical tomfoolery doesn’t impede helping people in the here and now. To disconnect science, religious experience, or life from social context that everything is embedded in is like having your feet firmly planted in midair.

Let me tell you a bit about what I do in this newsletter.

Regular posts give me an impetus to continue reading independently and articulate my thoughts. I feel like I have no idea what I’m talking about. I take that as a sign that I’m at my edge and I should keep pushing to make sense of the world.

Podcast episodes allow me to explore someone else’s perspective, life story, and advice from people inside and outside of medicine. I commonly interview people I disagree with, so do not assume I agree with someone’s statements merely because I choose not to verbalize my disagreement. Good listening is not about agreeing or disagreeing. I hope you will find some aspects of their stories thought-provoking and inspiring.
